Research universities are unique institutions, defined by their
underlying mission of generating knowledge in all spheres. They
are the only institutions that bring together scientists, scholars
and artists to carry out this work themselves and to transmit the
values and tools of their fields to the next generation. In recent
years, they have made enormous efforts to involve undergraduates
in this activity. Respondents to a survey conducted by the Reinvention
Center at the behest of the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates
in the Research University ranked an increase in undergraduate participation
in research and creative activity among their three most significant
achievements of the past three years. At the same time, research
universities face singular challenges in implementing this new priority.
These challenges include a history that emphasizes cutting-edge
research and graduate training, large enrollments, the inadequate
backgrounds of many students, students' desire for vocational preparation,
a lack of resources and an agenda driven by external factors such
as national rankings and the generation of external funding.
